New Year's Resolutions!?! God's Promises!

Have you had enough of the "Best of the Decade" lists yet? They appear everywhere! From my viewpoint, it seems as though there is more interest in looking back than in looking forward. Not exactly sure why, but perhaps humanity has an easier time with what is known than what is unknown. Yet, in the midst of this looking back is also talk of resolutions! Many "changes" will happen tomorrow in people's lives, but how many will last?

The key in all of this? Bank on God's promises! They are all throughout scripture. Read them. Pray. Trust God. Walk with others! God knows the future and He loves us! Isn't that amazing? This Sunday, in both services, many will share a promise from God's Word for His glory and our mutual encouragement. If you were to share, what promise would you focus on? Why not share one in the comments section?

Join me in trusting God for 2010, one step at a time, through the valleys and over the mountaintops! As scripture says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight." (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Merry Christmas! God Loves You!

John 1:14 may well be the most profound theological proposition in the entire bible – The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. Imagine the ramifications of this verse – the Word whom John says is God himself, the Creator and author of life, the light of the World taking on human form and coming to live with us – Emmanuel! What could possibly motivate the God of the Universe to come to this tiny speck of dust in our massive solar system, which is itself a tiny spot in a seemingly infinite universe? What could possibly motivate the Creator to become one of his billions and billions of creatures?

John tells us it is love For God so loved the world… Christmas is, at its very core, a love story – God longs to restore us to the relationship for which we were created. That’s why Christ came. That’s why we celebrate Christmas. If you feel unloved, then Christmas is for you. If you feel insignificant and worthless, then Christmas will restore your perspective. If you’ve lost hope, then Christmas is the greatest good news you could ever hope to hear. My prayer is that in the hustle and bustle of the season you will find a few quiet moments to reflect on the good news of Emmanuel – God With Us! Imagine that!

Christmas and Food

"I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty." Jesus in John 6:35
Food is a common topic at Christmas. How many turkey dinners have you had? Family gatherings aren't complete without a vast array of food items. The calendar is full with work dinners, church banquets, and more. Long lines in the grocery store to stock up on supplies (and in Starbucks to grab a coffee) try our patience. And, at the end of the season, perhaps a few of us have eaten too much, only to discover that the next day brings more hunger.
This has got me thinking. What about those who don't have enough food? What about the empty shelves in the Food Bank? We have a box in our church foyer where we regularly collect food for the Abbotsford Food Bank. What would it take for our congregation to fill that box to overflowing this Christmas? Or, better yet, fill it completely every month? This is one small way of helping meet a very real need in our community. But, once again, even after eating generously donated food, all those who partake will again be hungry the next day.
Jesus' words remind us of where the focus should be this Christmas. Not only on food, but on God's Son, the Bread of Life! We need to work hard at meeting practical needs, but we also need to address the spiritual needs so rampant all around us. What spiritual food can we offer this Christmas? What are we doing to offer people Jesus?
Offer a suggestion in the comment section to start a conversation around how food and Christmas connect. Make a donation to the Food Bank. Invite someone for lunch. Make dinner for your neighbour. Buy a stranger a sandwich.
Oh, by the way, you're all invited for lunch this Sunday (December 20th) at King Road. See you there.

Welcome!

"The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us..." John 1:14a

It's Christmas! Christmas is accompanied by concerts, banquets, trees, decorations, sometimes snow, (often too much) baking, busyness, joy, gifts...but what about the impatience, debt, loneliness, and despair that often tag along uninvited? The reality of Christmas highlights the tension we often find ourselves living with here on earth. Yet, into this hurting world and our broken lives, God sent His Son! This is why we celebrate. "The Word became flesh...glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom His favour rests!"
